My first artifact is an article that goes into depth of the statistics of poverty in America.
In order to begin to understand the causes and effects of poverty in America you first need to realize the extent of its presence here. Over 48 million Americans live in poverty, 16% of children in America live in poverty. As of last year the official poverty line was drawn at $23,283 income a year for a family of four. The poverty line varies between rural and urban America , for example the line in major metropolitan cities is around 30,000 or even higher because people have to pay more for shelter, food, and transportation. Government benefits like food stamps help keep around 13 million Americans out of poverty, but that means that 13 million are living on the brink of poverty. The most prominent issue for the poor is employment, although government spending is helping keep some people out of poverty, it isn't putting people in jobs.
Unless people get jobs they have no way of getting out of poverty so that shows just how unescapable poverty is once you're in it. That supports my claim that states that poverty is incredibly hard to overcome, and once you are in poverty whether you're born into it or fall into it, theres a very slim chance you can climb back up the social ladder and achieve the "American Dream".
