This video gives an overview of quite possibly the most famous story of upward mobility in the US, the story of Oprah Winfrey. She was born on January 29th, 1954 in rural Mississippi, and grew up in poverty her whole childhood. She was very intelligent and had great speaking abilities from early on and went on to win a full scholarship to Tennessee state University where she studied communications. She became the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor when she was only 19. She was a major hit and rose in popularity and in 1986 started the infamous "Oprah Winfrey Show". She built an empire that continued to grow even too today and has become one of the most influential, and richest women in the world. Her influence over the american public have helped shape book sales, religion, spirituality, and even political opinions. She has a net worth of almost 3 billion dollars, and was the first black women billionaire and was awarded the united states richest self made women. And if that doesn't make her impressive she even donates more money to charity than any other person in show businesses.
She as a child who grew up in extreme poverty, and even so as a black female, defies most standards. She proves that anyone from any background can make something of themselves if they work hard enough. But also her case is one in a million. Not many people have accomplished what she has in fact no one has. She's an outlier when it comes to statistical facts, and the likely hood of going from poverty to such wealth is very very slim. But what her case does show is that with the will and determination to better yourself and achieve great things you can do great things, and we may not be Oprah but if we try hard enough we can make something of ourselves.
