A good example of rags to riches is Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. He's the son of ex-United states Army trooper and then truck driver Fred Schultz, and his wife Elaine. With his younger sister ronnie and brother Michaels, they grew up in a housing complex for the poor. Because of his families poverty, he saw an escape in sports like baseball, football, and basketball, and was a member of the boys and girls club. Schultz won a football scholarship to the University of Northern Michigan, being the first in his family to go to college, and received his bachelor's degree in Communications in 1975. Shortly after graduation he went to work for Xerox. Schultz found work as an appliance salesman for Hammarplast, a company that sold European coffee makers in the United States and he rose quickly through the ranks to become director of sales. In 1982, Schultz was hired as director of retail operations and marketing for Starbucks. With his help and direction Starbucks began to grow in popularity and the founders didn't want to grow big and Schultz left, then two years later purchased the company with the help of investors. In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked Schultz as the 354th richest person in the United States, with a net worth of $1.5 billion.
In an interview with a british tabloid Schultz said:
"Growing up I always felt like I was living on the other side of the tracks. I knew the people on the other side had more resources, more money, happier families. And for some reason, I don’t know why or how, I wanted to climb over that fence and achieve something beyond what people were saying was possible. I may have a suit and tie on now but I know where I’m from and I know what it’s like."
He is a true case of hard work and determination driving him to success and rising from poverty to a billionaire. He saw life from the poorer side and new he wanted to achieve something that people were telling him was impossible, and by working hard he achieved his goals. So maybe by true hard work and determination the American dream is possible.
