The first two verses of this song go like this,
"She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there"
People talk about all the foundations and fundraisers and programs that are out there that help families and individuals who live in poverty but what are you individually doing to help? We talk about how we want world peace and to end world hunger and all those other cookie cutter statements but in reality people shy away and avoid dealing with matters like poverty and this song is a great representation of that. In the song the man pretends he can't hear the women, avoids looking at her, pretends she doesn't exist, then walks away as if he's embarrassed to be near the women. We would all like to think that we would help someone in need but I'm almost positive we've all walked away from someone in the streets, on a park bench, laying in the sidewalk on a cold winter night, we've all done it. So why do we preach about making a change and how people need to step up to make a difference when in our everyday lives we avoid and ignore those very things. What this song brings attention to is that if we want to make a change, if we want to see a change for the better in poverty we as individuals have to step up. We can't keep avoiding these pressing issues or they will never go away and will continue to grow and grow.
