From this chart you can see quite clearly that there is a gender gap when it comes to poverty rates, and females have the short straw. As you can see in all three age groups: 65+, 18-64, and under 18, females have a higher poverty rate than men. The largest gap is in the 65+ category with a 4.8% difference and the smallest gap is between the under 18 category with only a .2% gap. Its common knowledge that women's rights is still a prevalent issue, and although it may not be like it was before the mid 1900's women still do not have the same rights as men. As far as a wage gap goes women earn 78 cents for every dollar earned by a man, and that may seem like a small amount but the difference adds up and clearly like you see in the chart its affecting women ability to support themselves. It is also common knowledge that man are hired more than women. There are laws against discrimination of women in the work force but still even though it isn't labelled up front as discrimination women are hired less than men which makes unemployment another issue fro women which will in turn put them closer to poverty.
