This video gives you insight on the disadvantages and inequalities faced in immigrant communities and how being an immigrant affects poverty. You see what latinos, asian and other immigrant residents of queens deal with on a day to day bases and how differently they live there lives, most of them under the poverty line. Most are undocumented immigrants which makes finding jobs very difficult and they jobs that are available are very low wage jobs that are unreliable and they aren't treated fairly. Immigrants that have low paying jobs or no job at all have to rely on shelters but like the one in queens most require documentation to be served so undocumented immigrants are at an even greater disadvantage.
At the end an undocumented immigrant who was interviewed for the video, Ellena explains how she's become accustomed to living in fear and keeping her head down. She is one of the lucky who have jobs but her nanny job isn't enough to support her and she's never sure how long it will last. Most people think that immigrant workers are here to escape lives in harsh and horrible conditions at home and that even though they aren't treated as fairly its better than before and this is what Ellena had to say about that:
"What bothers me most, is that people always imagine that people like "us" work these kind of low paying jobs and this is what we want, but they don't know that a lot of us were brought here without our will, and we have no where to go but here"
She later says that despite all of the hardships she faces that she still believes that she will be able to live the American Dream, and although hope is admirable what american dream could she be hoping for when she's already escaped the extreme poverty of Latin America and come to this "Free Land" and is living everyday in fear.
