In 2012 21.8% of children under the age of 18 lived in poverty, making children America's poorest people. And harshly enough the younger the kid the worse off they are, the percentage of children under the age of 5 living in poverty is 25.1, and almost 1 in 10 live in extreme poverty. The question is why are children in such harsh conditions? and it's because they are born into it and/or have a family situation that has caused it. The government defines poverty as a family of 4 with an annual income below $23,492 ($64 a day), extreme poverty is defined by a family of 4 with an annual income less than half of the poverty level ($11,746, $32 a day). And unfortunately things are much worse than that, according to the National Center For Children in Poverty at Colombia University a family of 4 needs an income of about twice the poverty threshold to support themselves, and more than 42% of american children live in families that don't meet that mark.
By now it should be obvious that being born into poverty ensures a childhood in harsh conditions, and likely a similar adulthood. By growing up in extreme poverty it makes getting an education incredibly difficult which means finding a good job that can support you is very unlikely. So how is it fair to these thousands of children who never had a chance to make it in our world. They were born to poor parents, weren't educated sufficiently, unable to get a good job, placing them in this unescapable cycle of poverty.
