In 2012 people with disabilities had an average income of about $6,000 less than people without disabilities. 25 years have passed since the Americans with disabilities act became law, but still Americans with disabilities still face significant barriers to employment and independent living. More than 28 percent of adults aged 21-64 who have a disability and are not institutionalized live in poverty, compared with the overall 12.4 percent national poverty rate. Not only do people with disabilities have to deal with trying to find and keep jobs they have to deal with expenses in regards to their disability, and those costs can be in the 100,000's. This article tells about different americans who have disabilities and examples of how much money they have to spend on their disabilities. One example was Jane a 60 year old mother of 5 who has autism and a neuromuscular disability and she said "The assumption is that disabled people are incompetent, and we don't have family obligations, [and] that we are stealing from the system," . "But being poor is a full-time job."
